READ THE PATTERN, NOT THE LAST NOTIFICATION
Are they losing interest over text?
A slower reply is not a verdict. A sustained drop in curiosity, initiative, and follow-through is much more informative.

Look for the pattern,
not the perfect explanation.
Questions disappear
They still respond, but the conversation no longer turns toward you. Without curiosity, the chat becomes an interview conducted by one person.
Plans lose specificity
A real plan becomes 'maybe sometime' or never reaches a day and place. Interest that cannot survive contact with a calendar is not yet usable interest.
Your effort expands
You write more, explain more, and add more warmth to recover the earlier energy. That extra effort can hide the fact that the other person's contribution has shrunk.
02 / THE DEEPER READ
Do not overread response time
People work, parent, travel, sleep, and use phones differently. A single long gap carries little meaning without context. Compare the person's current behaviour with their own earlier pattern and with whether they still initiate or make concrete plans.
Watch for reciprocity, not performance
A witty reply can feel rewarding, but mutuality requires more than entertainment. Look for questions, volunteered information, remembered details, invitations, and follow-through. Those behaviours show the conversation is being co-created.
Run one clean experiment
Stop compensating for a few days, or make one specific invitation that is easy to accept or decline. The goal is not to play games. It is to remove your extra effort so the underlying level of interest becomes visible.
FACTS FIRST
Your chat cannot reveal their private motive.
It can reveal who initiated, who stayed curious, whether plans became real, where the energy changed, and whether you were responding to mutual interest or carrying an open loop alone.
03 / COMMON QUESTIONS
Less spiralling.
More evidence.
Do shorter replies mean they are losing interest?
Not by themselves. Shorter replies matter more when they arrive with fewer questions, less initiative, and no movement toward meeting.
How long should I wait before texting again?
There is no universal timer. Match the established rhythm, then prioritise a clear invitation over another round of small talk.
What if they say they are bad at texting?
That may be true. The useful question is whether they compensate through calls, plans, or consistent follow-through.
